VIZ Media describes the first volume of DANDADAN as:
Momo Ayase strikes up an unusual friendship with her school’s UFO fanatic, whom she nicknames “Okarun” because he has a name that is not to be said aloud. Whole Momo believes in spirits, she thinks aliens are nothing but nonsense. Her new friend, meanwhile, thinks the exact opposite. To settle matters, the two set out to prove each other wrong – Momo to a UFO hotspot and Okarun to a haunted tunnel! What unfolds next is a beautiful story of young love…and oddly horny aliens and spirits?

Main Characters
Ken Takakura / Okarun

Japanese voice actor: Natsuki Hanae
English voice actor: AJ Beckles
Ken Takakura or nicknamed “Okarun” by Momo Ayase, is the male protagonist of the series.
He’s a strong believer in all things occult – specifically aliens and UFOs. This has isolated him from the rest of his classmates and caused him to be bullied. That is until Momo Ayase stands up for him. The two of them soon make a bet with each other:
Momo Ayase has to investigate a UFO site and Okarun has to investigate a haunted tunnel in Shono City that’s inhabited by “Turbo Granny” a famous yokai (cursed spirit).
After surviving the chaotic events of the alien encounter and Turbo Granny – despite Okarun having his two kintama (his balls) missing after being cursed by Turbo Granny, Okarun and Momo become friends. They gain allies as they encounter more paranormal and yokai entities they must overcome.
Because Okarun was cursed by Turbo Granny – this soon led to him gaining some of her Yokai powers which allows him to transform his body into a powerful yokai form.
Yokai – Physical Form
In his yokai form, Okarun’s hair turns white and spiky with red streaks, his eyes turn red and are heavily outlined in black with each eye having a red streak passing through on his face, and he wears a black mask with two rows of multiple teeth. His body grows larger but hunches over, and he wears a black outfit that flares out.
Yokai form – Personality and Abilities
Okarun shared a consciousness with Turbo Granny – and despite her consciousness being removed, her spiritual powers were accidentally left inside him. This allows him to transform into his spirit form at will.
Okarun has gained the 100 km/hr speed ability of Turbo Granny. His body’s durability increases as well as his bite force. Later in the series he gains more abilities.
Whenever Okarun transforms into his yokai form, his personality changes as well. He becomes depressed and mellow compared to his normal personality. He also has a tendency to refer to Momo as “babe” (at least in the English dub version) and ends his sentences with “yo”.
Momo Ayase

Japanese voice actor: Shion Wakayama
English voice actor: Abby Trott
Momo Ayase is the main female protagonist of DANDADAN. She lives with her grandmother, Seiko Ayase, who’s a powerful and famous spirit medium known as Santa Dodoria.
Because of her family history, Momo whole heartly believes in spirits/yokai but not in aliens or UFOs. She stands up for Okarun when he was being bullied at school and soon after makes a bet with him:
She has to investigate a UFO site and Okarun has to investigate a haunted place inhabited by “Turbo Granny” a cursed yokai.
When both places turn out to be real and contain their respective paranormal/yokai entities, Okarun and Momo must fight back to survive. Momo unlocks her dormant psychic powers meanwhile Okarun loses his kintama after being cursed by Turbo Granny.
The two must work together to recover both of Okarun’s two missing kintama. Along the way Momo and Okarun befriend more allies and encounter more paranormal and supernatural entities.
Aira Shiratori

Japanese voice actor: Ayane Sakura
English voice actor: Lisa Reimold
Aira is one of the main characters in DANDADAN. She is first introduced as a popular student at Kami High, the same high school Momo and Okarun attend. After having discovered one of Okarun’s kintama by mistake and believing it was “a divine sign that she was the chosen one, destined to protect the world from evil, she gained the ability to see spirits.
Although at first Aira doesn’t get along with Momo and Okarun, they grow much closer after surviving their battle against Acrobatic Silky. Aira is gifted Acrobatic Silky’s aura (that saves her life) and gains the yokai’s powers – which transforms her into a yokai form (similar to Okarun).
Aira in her yokai form gains enhanced speed and agility to allow her to perform incredible acrobatic abilities such as improved balance, flexibility, dexterity, and bodily coordination.
Aira soon becomes a part of Momo and Okarun’s friend group and joins them in battling against paranormal & yokai entities.
Jin Enjoji / Jiji

Japanese voice actor: Kaito Ishikawa
English voice actor: Aleks Le
Jiji is one of the main protagonists in DANDADAN. He’s introduced as being Momo’s childhood friend and although they drifted apart after he moved away, they are reunited when he enrolls at her high school and requests Seiko’s assistance in riding his house of the Evil Eye yokai that’s been haunting him.
Jiji has a lot of energy and tends to express himself with dramatic movements, humorous facial expressions, and ends his sentences with unique phrases such as “Fuuuu” (Woo) or “Fuuuuwaaaatsu” (Woo-Hoo-Hoo).
Seiko Ayase

Japanese voice actor: Nana Mizuki
English voice actor: Kari Wahlgren
Seiko Ayase is Momo’s grandmother and guardian. She’s a well-known spirit medium under the alias Santa Dodoria.
Seiko has a range of spirit medium abilities, but she does have limitations; she’s only capable of borrowing power from gods that reside from within the Kamigoe City region (where she and Momo live). She’s often seen with her signature weapon, Nessie, a metal bat with the words “Power of Nessie” inscribed in Japanese on it.
Turbo Granny

(Via: @NetflixAnime on X)
Japanese voice actor: Mayumi Tanaka
English voice actor: Barbara Goodson
Turbo Granny makes her appearance while Okarun is investigating the haunted tunnel at Shono City that she inhabits. She’s called Turbo Granny because of her ability to run up to speeds of 100km/hr – this explains her other nickname, the 100 km/hr Granny.
During her fight with Okarun and Momo (who now possesses awakened psychic powers), she curses Okarun- turning his body into a cursed, spiritual form as her consciousness inhabits his mind and he steals away his kintama (his balls). Momo fights back against Turbo Granny and seals her cursed powers within Okarun and traps her consciousness inside of a stuffed doll.
The three of them make a deal: Turbo Granny will help locate Okarun’s two missing kintama if Momo and Okarun agree to return her powers back to her.
Despite Turbo Granny starting as an antagonist against Okarun and Momo, she later develops into a major supporting character throughout the rest of the series.
Turbo Granny first appears as a deranged, yokai woman spirit, but after her consciousness gets extracted out of Okarun, she is trapped within a maneki-neko doll (a white cat doll).
Closing Thoughts…
I love how crazy and unique DANDADAN is. As a fan of both aliens and spirits, this series immediately hooked me from the very first episode. Not to mention the opening theme is extremely catchy (I remember playing it on repeat when I first started wathcing the series). I really enjoy all of the different character relationships/interactions with one another. Especially Momo and Okarun’s friendship (which we all know is heading towards a romantic relationship!!)
The use of color in the animation is mesmerizing. I still remember the first episode vividly because of the array of colors (and not to mention the questionable aliens and Turbo Granny!)
I can’t wait to see what’s going to come in the next season!
DANDADAN Season 2 premieres in July 2025.
Thanks as always for reading my blog,
Jessica Mohan
