Anime Adaptation Announcement
Following the release of Volume 3 of the manga series in Japan manga author, Sumiko Arai officially announced that the manga would be receiving an anime adaptation.
The release date and other additional information regarding staff and cast members has not yet been released.

A few years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined a third book in bookstores let alone an anime adaptation of this series. Manga Synopsis
Yen Press has released the official English synopsis of the manga:
Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya loves listening to rock, but no one else seems to share her interest…until she meets a cool, stylish employee at a CD shop. Dresses in black from head to toe, he has this air of mystery about him, and his taste in music is impeccable. Aya falls hard for him – not knowing her crush is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! For her part, Mitsuki generally keeps to herself and avoids standing out at school. But given that she sits right next to Aya, Mitsuki’s all too aware of the other girl’s feelings, and she’s afraid to reveal the truth. So why does she find herself talking with Aya more and more…?
The English manga translation is done by Ajani Oloye.
Manga Release and Reception
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All made its first debut on Sumiko Arai’s official personal Twitter account on April 10, 2022.
The manga was officially serialized online on Pixiv Comic on April 29, 2023, and later that same month was seralized in print by Kadokawa Shoten, a Japanese manga publisher.
With the release of the first initial volume of the manga, a total of 150,000 copies were sold within the first week and by September 2023 the total had reached to 200,000 copies.
The first English manga was published by Yen Press on Oct. 22, 2024, and the second volume was published on February 18, 2025.
The manga has received many awards since its release:
- 2023 Next Manga Award in the web manga category
- Ranked second on the Da Vinci magazine list for the 2023 “Book of the Year”
- Ranked second in Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoil list of “Best Manga for Female Readers” in 2024.

Yen Press describes Volume 2 of the manga as:
Aya’s found out that the guy she was interested in isn’t a guy at all-and she’s also realized that she just can’t keep her cool around Mitsuki! The two haven’t quite put a name on their complex, earnest feelings, but they only grow as the pair continues to bond over the music they love. With their senior year at hand, future plans are coming into question…and Aya’s thrown for a loop when a mysterious woman shows up and wants Mitsuki to go overseas!
The synopsis for Volume 3 has yet to be revealed.
Sumiko Arai posted on X that pre-orders for the 3rd volume have started to release on February 20, 2025, on Japan Amazon. The release date for the English version has yet to be announced.

Drama CD Adaptation
On March 27, the Drama CD was released for The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All by Sumiko Arai. The Drama CD was available in two editions: a regular edition of just the Drama CD and the other was a limited edition consisting of a booklet of four newly drawn manga pages.
The voice cast of the Drama CD includes:

Closing Thoughts…
I haven’t heard about this manga before, but I’m so glad I did! The concept is amusing and I love that both girls are into rock music. Now I just wanna read the 2 volumes and find out what happens between these two girls and the complicated relationship they’ve found themselves in! I’ll be looking forward to the anime adaptation, hopefully we don’t have to wait too long for it!
