Speculation on Alice in Borderland Season 3
With the official announcement of Season 3, many people are left speculating what could happen, myself included.
The end of season 2 concluded the end of the original manga story. There is Alice in Borderland: Retry, a spinoff from the main story. However, Netflix has announced that season 3 will be a brand new story that’s not based on the original work.
A brand new story means that even the dedicated manga fans of the series won’t know what to expect in Season 3 of the show. This makes it all the more exciting!
We know that Season 3 will see the return of Arisu and Usagi, as they were shown in the teaser trailer. They will be battling the Joker card, the final game of the Borderland. Considering it’s the final game, it’s to be expected that this will be the most challenging one yet.
At the end of season 2, those who opted to leave the “Borderland” woke up in a hospital and lost all of their memories from the Borderland. This includes main characters Arisu and Usagi, although there’s speculation that Usagi not only remembers Arisu, but she may have recovered her memories from Borderland as well. This can be seen during the teaser trailer for season 3, where Usagi is seen calling out Arisu’s name, in a manner that suggests she remembers who he is and their shared history together.
I believe that Usagi, Arisu, and everyone else who opted to “leave the Borderland” were actually inducted into the final game, hence why we see the Joker card on the table in the last shot of Season 2. The Joker game has already started and now they must try to beat the game despite losing their memories at the start of the game. All of them waking up in the hospital and in the real world could actually all be an illusion and they may very well still be within the Borderland.

After all, during the Queen of Hearts game, Arisu and Usagi went through many illusions and mind games that tested their wit and resolve. It wouldn’t be too far-fetched if the same thing was happening again, this time on a much wider and realistic scale.
Maybe it’s not an illusion at all and the Joker game is being played out in the real world. Based on the teaser trailer it appears everyone had returned back to reality – the environment is normal and there’s regular people in the streets. This would make beating the game more complex, since it appears everything is back to “normal”.
It’s hard to know where the final game is taking place, considering the complexity of illusions and mind games this show has previously pulled in the prior season during the Queen of Hearts game.
It’s unknown who else may be returning from the previous season or if we’ll be introduced to new characters in this final game.

Based off the official teaser image for season 3, it’s shown there’s a mysterious third person in a wheel chair accompanying Arisu and Usagi at the top of a building. Could this be a character we’ve already met or is it someone brand new?
A theory I have is that the identity of the mysterious third person could potentially be Usagi’s father, who went missing prior to the events before Borderland. We don’t know much about him, but we know he went missing while rock climbing at a mountain and never returned home. With his fate being unclear, perhaps he somehow found himself trapped within the Borderland and is now reunited with Usagi.
The third person very well may be a brand new character as well.
Until Netflix announces more updates regarding Season 3 or the release of the show, we will have to wait to find out more information!
What I really hope for is that season 3 will see the return of prior characters such as:
- Shuntaro Chishiya
- Kuina
- Ann
I thoroughly enjoyed these characters and their character arcs we witnessed in the previous two seasons. I’m hoping they return for the third and final season of the show.
Closing Thoughts…
Words can’t describe how insanely pumped I am for Alice in Borderland Season 3! I’ve been a huge fan of this show from the very first time I watched episode one way back in 2020. I love the concept of the show: the apocalyptic world that these characters have been forced into and now must survive by participating in death games to live. It’s thrilling watching them encounter and outwit all of the deadly and complex games.
It’ll be suspenseful watching Usagi and Arisu participating in the deadliest game of them all: the Joker Card. Will they survive and outwit this final game?
“You’re not ready for the final game.”
Alice in Borderland Season 3 coming September 2025.
