PREMIERE DATE
The anime, Anne Shirley, will premiere on April 5, 2025, on NHK Education TV in Japan and stream on Crunchyroll.
The 24 episode show will be directed by Hiroshi Kawamata. This new anime adaptation is based off the original novel, Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
This isn’t the first time the story of Anne of Green Gables has been adapted into an anime in Japan; once in 1979 directed by Isao Takahata and second in 2009 directed by Katsuyoshi Watabe. In both cases, the anime was animated by Nippon Animation as part of its World Masterpiece Theater series.
It’ll be exciting to see the fresh anime adaptation later this year, and what new perspectives we can gleam from it.

Closing Thoughts…
The original novel is a classic read, so I’m interested in watching the anime adaptation of this story. It’ll be interesting to see how the story unfolds in the 24 episode format. Based off the key visual, teaser trailer, and additional photos, the animation looks absolutely beautiful!
At this time, it’s unknown when it’ll be available for streaming. Hopefully if it’s popular enough, they will decide to stream it for worldwide viewing!
Thanks as always for reading my blog,
Jessica Mohan
