FNAF 10th Anniversary: Into the Pit

Two months ago, the Five Night’s at Freddy’s, FNAF, franchise celebrated it’s 10 year anniversary. The week leading up to August 8th was known by fans as FNAF week – with each day of that week being FNAF related, all leading up to August 8th when a new game, Into the Pit, was set to release!

Although, in typical FNAF fashion, the game got released early on August 7th – albeit, this wasn’t intentional at first, but the fans were excited nonetheless! Without further ado, I wanted to discuss, Into the Pit, and share with you everything you need to know about this new FNAF game!

What’s it About?

Into the Pit, is Five Nights at Freddy’s newest installment in it’s gaming franchise. It’s a single player 2D survival horror game developed by Mega Cat Studios. It’s available to play on Steam and on console (PS4, PS5, Xbox, and Switch).

This game is based off the first book of the Fazbear Fright’s series, Fazbear’s Frights: Into the Pit. It’s an interesting tale about Oswald, the main character, having to briefly live with a creepy yellow rabbit, Spring Bonnie, who is impersonating his father after having switched places at the time traveling ball pit in Jeff’s Pizza, the rundown pizzeria in town. This is a huge can of worms to open and if you’re new to FNAF, this might be confusing to follow, but “bear” with me.

The video game version of Into the Pit, follows the same events that transpired within both the novel and graphic novel, although these ideas are expanded upon and new ideas are introduced in order for the video game to have an interactive, expansive narrative.

The video game starts with Oswald’s dad driving Oswald to Jeff’s Pizza, where he’ll be staying until his dad gets off work. Bored by the idea of having to spend his free time at Jeff’s Pizza, he decides to pull a prank on his dad by pretending to go missing inside of a mysterious ball pit in an abandoned room at Jeff’s Pizza. Unbeknown to Oswald, the ball pit transports him through time back to the year, 1985. When he reemerges from the ball pit, he finds himself in a Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza surrounded by loud, energetic kids.

Oswald discovers dancing animatronics on stage: Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica. Amongst the crowds of pizza-stuffed kids, he befriends two boys, Chip and Mike. This is where the game and the novels differ. Instead of heading home and returning over the next few weeks, the game jumps straight to Oswald discovering a secret room filled with six dead kids and Spring Bonnie, who is staring right at him.

Running for his life, Oswald is chased by Spring Bonnie back to the ball pit. Jumping in, Oswald thinks he’s safe back in his present timeline. Oswald soon gets yelled at by his Dad, but it gets cut short when Spring Bonnie reaches from out of the ball pit and pulls Oswald’s dad inside. Yanking his dad out, Oswald saves his dad…or, so he thought.

Impersonating his dad, Spring Bonnie appears to everyone else as Oswald’s dad, but Oswald knows the truth. In the next 5 days and nights, Oswald must go back and forth into the pit in order to save not only his dad but other kids trapped in the past at the pizzeria.

Main Characters

Oswald

Oswald is the protagonist of the story and videogame, Into the Pit. He’s a 10-year-old boy with spiky, slicked back brown hair, brown eyes, and wearing a red and yellow striped shirt, unzipped blue hoodie, and blue jeans.

Oswald is pessimistic as seen when he complains about having to hang out at Jeff’s Pizza while his dad goes to work, and cowardly as seen when he runs away from Spring Bonnie. Throughout the story’s events, Oswald learns to become brave. He desperately wants to leave his rundown town, suggesting they even bubble wrap grandma in order for them to move away.

Oswald likes sci-fi as evident from the Godzilla-like poster hanging up on his bedroom wall. He also like to draw creatures that strike a resemblance to the FNAF animatronics, despite not knowing anything about them prior to the start of the story.

Dad has to be stuck in the ball pit. I gotta get back to Jeff’s!

-Oswald, Into the Pit

Oswald’s main goal in the game, Into the Pit, is to find and bring back his dad from the past through the use of the ball pit in Jeff’s Pizza. While searching for his dad, Oswald also helps rescue trapped kids within Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

Spring Bonnie

Spring Bonnie or the Yellow Rabbit is the antagonist in the story and game, Into the Pit. This animatronic or creature (it’s unclear if he’s either or both) is covered in yellow, fuzzy fur with big paws and feet, soulless eyes, a sinister grin that can unhinge to reveal double rows of sharp fangs, and wearing a purple bow tie.

Spring Bonnie makes his first appearance in the game when Oswald is in the past at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, while hiding in the Golden Freddy suit.

Spring Bonnie unhinging his jaw, revealing his sharp fangs.

Spring Bonnie is extremely dangerous and hostile. After Oswald found him in a room with six murdered children, Spring Bonnie chases after him wanting to kill him as well.

When Oswald jumps into the ball pit, Spring Bonnie follows after him then drags Oswald’s Dad into the pit and takes over his life by masquerading as him. To everyone else Spring Bonnie appears as Oswald’s Dad, but Oswald can see past his deception.

Hidden Easter Eggs

Into the Pit is filled with many easter eggs from past FNAF games, books, and the movie. Any dedicated FNAF fan can identify them throughout the game, but incase you missed them, I’ll point out a handful for you.

The Stitchwraith

When you’re in Oswald’s bedroom at night, if you let Oswald stand idle for 10 minutes, the Stitchwraith will appear outside the bedroom window. To give context, the Stitchwraith is a character from the book series, Fazbear Frights. This character is an animatronic endoskeleton that was brought to life by “agony” and contains the souls of Jake and Andrew.

The Twisted Ones

If you’re lucky enough, the poster of Zendrelix (the game’s version of Godzilla) near Oswald’s closet will randomly change to a poster of the FNAF book cover, The Twisted Ones.

Trash and the Gang

Make your way to the Mill and you’ll find broken versions of Trash and the Gang, a referenced to Pizza Simulator, the 6th installment in the FNAF game franchise.

GGY

This can be found when clicking on an arcade machine when Oswald is in the past in Freddy’s Fazbear’s Pizza. It’s a reference to the story, GGY, the first story in Tales from the Pizzaplex 5: The Bobbiedots Conclusion. It’s also a reference to FNAF: Security Breach where all the arcade machines have “GGY” as the top score of the leaderboard.

Wow, whoever “GGY” is has the top score on every game. They must be really good.

William and Henry’s Photo

In the room where Oswald’s dad is tied up hangs a picture on the wall of two men; one in a golden bear costume and one wearing a golden bunny costume – resembling the same photo of William and Henry in The Silver Eyes: Graphic Novel.

Hinted to be William and Henry in their golden bear and bunny suits.

Secret Phone Calls

There are several secret phone calls you can access throughout the game that reveal hidden dialogue. One of the voices you may recognize is Phone Guy!

Garrett’s Plane

A reference to Garrett’s plane from the Five Night at Freddy’s movie, appears on a table in the same room where Oswald’s Dad is tied up.

Secret Mini-Games

In the many endings of the game, in order to unlock the game’s True Ending, you must complete three secret mini-games that during certain nights.

Each secret mini-game is the title of the three other stories that appear in the same Fazbear Frights first book as Into the Pit:

  • Count the Ways
  • Fetch
  • To Be Beautiful

Similar in style with the FNAF 3 mini-games, these three secret mini-games are a great reference to the three Fazbear Fright stories and they may be hinting at more possible game adaptions in the future. Mega Cat Studios we see what you’re up to!

Final Thoughts…

Five Night’s at Freddy’s has been a core memory growing up and continues to entertain me as an adult. It’s crazy to think this series has been going on for 10 years now and it shows no signs of slowing down!

I highly recommend either playing Into the Pit or watching Youtubers such as Markiplier, Dawko, GT Live, or Fuhnaff play and react if you still haven’t had a chance to immerse yourself in this game. Now, the question remains…are you brave enough to jump into the pit?

Thanks as always for reading my blog,

Jessica Mohan
